When I was in London I remember seeing Joncquil De Vries’ paintings in the Saatchi gallery. I love that they combine painting techniques with printmaking - wiping away the surface of a wet film of paint, like a monoprint. They have an atmospheric, spooky, kind of Serafine Pick vibe. They particularly caught my attention at the time because in second year painting I’d also been experimenting with this technique, subtractive painting, doing a layer of watercolour on wooden board and wiping it away with a wet brush. Knowing that this is such a tedious process I really admire Joncquil De Vries’ success but personally I don’t think I’ll go down that path again.
